Did Justyn Ross do enough to earn a roster spot with Chiefs?
The Kansas City Chiefs signed Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross in 2022 and it felt like a home run move at the time. Ross was a stud at Clemson, tallying 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns during his freshman year in 2018 and racking up 865 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019. He missed all of 2020 with a congenital fusion in his spine.
Ross entered the draft in 2022 but he sat and waited through the entire draft without hearing his name called. That led to him signing with the Chiefs but, unfortunately, fans haven't gotten to see much from Ross. The former Clemson star suffered a foot injury as a rookie that ended up sidelining him for the entire year. In 2023, he appeared in 10 games and had just six catches for 53 yards.
It shouldn't come as a shock that Ross isn't a lock to make the team this year. He's fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster with Mecole Hardman, Skyy Moore, and Nikko Remigio. We're not including Kadarius Toney here because his time with the team needs to be over.
So far through the preseason, Ross has collected one catch for 23 yards against Jacksonville and two receptions for 16 yards against the Bears. These aren't mind-blowing numbers by any means but preseason can be hard to gauge talent since the starters aren't out there much and Ross has not had Patrick Mahomes throwing to him in these games.
Will the Chiefs keep Justyn Ross on the 53-man roster in 2024?
It feels very likely that Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, Justin Watson, and Xavier Worthy will make the team so then it comes down to if the Chiefs keep six or seven wide receivers. Hardman will always be the Super Bowl hero for this team and that could help him win a spot on the team while Moore has mostly been a headache for the fan base since joining them in 2022.
So where does that leave Ross? He hasn't seen a ton of playing time during his Chiefs tenure but the team wouldn't keep bringing him back if they didn't see potential with him. If Ross does make the team in 2024, let's hope that he can show the team they made the right decision in sticking with him.
