DeAndre Hopkins gets released and all of Twitter points to the Chiefs
By Matt Conner
DeAndre Hopkins is now free to choose the team for whom he's going to play in 2023. After years of playing for the Houston Texans and then Arizona Cardinals, the veteran wide receiver was released by the Cards on Friday after months of trade rumors to various teams.
The narrative around potentially acquiring Hopkins changes for a lot of teams with the switch from a trade to a release. Instead of giving up draft assets and taking on a contract already in place, teams can now keep all of their future selections and work on outbidding other teams. While the cap is tight for many teams, including the Chiefs, it does allow them to creatively structure a deal that might make his signing possible—whereas his former deal would not have made that possible.
Given how productive he's been in his career and even in limited action last year, it's a bit surprising that the Cardinals couldn't get something for Hopkins. Alas, he's a free agent now either way and the Chiefs have a real chance to get him.
Hopkins would immediately be the team's top wide receiver for the Chiefs and would give a bit more cover for younger players to emerge without pressure. Together with Travis Kelce, the offense would feel almost unfair for most teams, which is why it seems like all of Chiefs Twitter immediately started banging the proverbial drum for general manager Brett Veach to do what he can to land Hopkins.
First, even those outside of Kansas City are saying the Chiefs make the most sense.
We're also pretty sure this is how everyone will react, if it happens.
This is why the chorus of Chiefs fans sounds like this.
