Clark Hunt addresses Andy Reid retirement rumors on GMFB
By Ryan Heckman
When there are plenty of storylines to choose from leading up to Super Bowl LVIII, many of the Kansas City Chiefs headlines have revolved around head coach Andy Reid as of late.
In fact, for weeks now, there have been rumors swirling around the idea that Reid might retire following this season.
Wednesday morning, Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt joined the crew at NFL Network's Good Morning Football to discuss the Chiefs' path to the big game yet again, how the team has honored his mother this year, among other topics.
Of course, Peter Schrager went straight for the juicy topic when he had the opportunity, asking Hunt his thoughts on Reid's potential retirement. Hunt's answer was the same as it's been all week when he's been asked about Reid.
Clark Hunt doesn't believe Andy Reid is close to retirement.
"I have no sense from Andy that he's ready to retire," Hunt responded.
Hunt's demeanor felt like he was suggesting everyone drop this rumor already. He almost seemed dismissive about it at first, but did give a reasonable answer as to why he doesn't think Reid is going to call it a career.
Hunt talked about Reid having the opportunity to coach Patrick Mahomes, which he called a "dream" for an offensive mind like Reid. His logic feels similar to anyone else thinking with a sound mind, lately. Why would Reid decide to retire in the thick of Mahomes' prime? He very well could have multiple Super Bowls yet to win. Why stop now?
Obviously, the big factor that hasn't always been talked about within this conversation is arguably the one reason why Reid could and ultimately may retire earlier than some think: his health. Reid has had reason to be concerned about his health in recent years, and if it came down to taking care of himself versus coaching, that's an easy decision.
Of course, we would all hope and believe that Reid's health scares are behind him so that he can continue doing what he loves to do, and all while next to one of the greatest quarterbacks this game has ever seen.
For now, we'll let the big man in red focus on the Super Bowl and, thanks to Hunt, hopefully we can put the retirement conversation to bed for a while.
