Chiefs trade up to take Kingsley Suamataia in second round of 2024 NFL Draft
By Matt Conner
One day after adding some serious speed to the passing game for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs submitted the card for their second selection of the 2024 NFL Draft with the name of Kingsley Suamataia, a move intended to bolster the competition at offensive tackle.
In order to draft Suamataia, the Chiefs worked out a minor trade up at the bottom of the second round with the San Francisco 49ers—sending No. 64 and a fifth round choice at No. 173 in order to move up a single spot to No. 63 and No. 211 overall. With the pick, they grabbed Suamataia, a projectable tackle out of Brigham Young.
The Chiefs have made their second selection of this year's draft, a move to help bolster the competition at offensive tackle.
The book on Suamataia is that he could eventually turn into a very good starting tackle at the professional level, but the truth is that he's entering the league as a raw product. He was second-team All-Big 12 last season and started one season apiece on the left and right sides for the Cougars.
Overall, the Chiefs have Suamataia and Wanya Morris to compete at left tackle along with Lucas Niang. Jawaan Taylor is penciled in long-term at right tackle, but the Chiefs have plenty of young talent to take into the preseason at this stage while still maintaining the option of signing a vet like Donovan Smith once again.
The Chiefs came into Day 2 of the draft with a single pick after agreeing to slide down the draft board nearly 40 spots—from No. 95 overall in the third round to No. 133 in the fourth round—and another 20-ish picks in the seventh round to move up four spots in the first round. The movement allowed the Chiefs to add the ultimate mismatch in this year's draft in Xavier Worthy, the fastest player in this year's draft class.
The Chiefs now have five more picks remaining in this year's draft class:
- Round 3 - No. 131
- Round 4 - No. 133
- Round 5 - No. 159
- Round 5 - No. 173
- Round 7 - No. 248
