Chiefs Super Bowl wins, record & history
The Kansas City Chiefs have been in the NFL world since 1960 and have quite the storied history. For quite some time, the Chiefs only had two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl win but that all changed when Patrick Mahomes arrived in Kansas City, beginning an era of dominance.
The Chiefs actually have the honor of appearing in the first-ever Super Bowl, which took place in 1967. They appeared in the big game again three years later and won their first, and for 50 years their only, title.
Five decades came and went with the Chiefs not even sniffing a Super Bowl appearance. They made the AFC Championship Game a few times but failed to reclaim the Lamar Hunt Trophy until the 2019 season. That 2019 season saw the Chiefs end the 50-year Super Bowl drought, making it to the game and winning the team's first title since the 1969 season.
Since that win, the Chiefs added two more Super Bowl trophies to their trophy case and have become the villains of the league. It's not something fans ever would have expected, especially considering how long they went without making it to the big game. Now they're expected to not only make the Super Bowl, but to win it.
How many Super Bowls have the Chiefs won?
The Chiefs have won four Super Bowls, including three over the course of a five-year span. They won Super Bowl IV, Super Bowl LIV, Super Bowl LVII, and Super Bowl LVIII.
What years did the Chiefs go to the Super Bowl?
The Chiefs made it to the first-ever Super Bowl in the 1966 season, but unfortunately lost to the Green Bay Packers. They got back to the Super Bowl in the 1969 season and won it all, taking down the Minnesota Vikings to get their first-ever Super Bowl title.
Five decades went by before the Chiefs reached the big game again, as they wouldn't punch their ticket to a Super Bowl until the 2019 season. They beat the San Francisco 49ers for their second trophy. They made it back one year later in 2020 but lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Chiefs won two more Super Bowls in the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the first of those two coming against the Philadelphia Eagles and the other against the 49ers.
How many Super Bowl appearances do the Chiefs have?
The Chiefs have been to the Super Bowl six times and are 4-2 in the big game.
Who have the Chiefs played against in the Super Bowl?
The first-ever Super Bowl was between the Chiefs and Packers with Green Bay prevailing by a lopsided score of 35 to 10. Three years later, in Super Bowl LIV, the Chiefs faced the Vikings and won their first-ever Super Bowl title by a score of 23 to 7.
It took 50 years before the Chiefs would get back to the big game, not getting back until the 2019 season when they squared off against the 49ers. The Chiefs won that game, coming from behind in the fourth quarter but somehow still managing to win by double digits (31-20). They reached the Super Bowl again the next year but unfortunately they had injuries along the offensive line and got blown out by the Buccaneers with the Bucs winning 31 to 9.
The Chiefs didn't let that loss slow them down, reaching the big game again in the 2022 season and beating the Eagles 38 to 35. They became the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls in the 2023 season when they took down the 49ers once again, this time winning it 25 to 22 in overtime.
Which Chiefs have been crowned Super Bowl MVP?
The Chiefs have only had two Super Bowl MVPs and it shouldn't surprise you that they've both been quarterbacks. Len Dawson won Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl IV after throwing for 142 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
In the other three Chiefs' Super Bowl wins, it's been Patrick Mahomes who has won MVP. Some might argue that Mahomes shouldn't have won it in Super Bowl LIV but he ultimately threw for 286 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions while adding a rushing touchdown.
In Super Bowl LVII, Mahomes absolutely deserved his MVP honor, as he only had six incompletions and threw for three touchdowns and zero interceptions while rushing for 44 yards with his legs. He threw for 333 yards in Super Bowl LVIII and had two touchdowns and one pick while dashing for 66 yards.
