Chiefs reward unsung hero Steve Spagnuolo with contract extension
The Kansas City Chiefs are riding high after winning their third Super Bowl title in five years and this year's championship felt different due to the defense playing at an entirely different level all season. Steve Spagnuolo did some incredibly special things with this defense and now they have the hardware to prove it.
As a result, the Chiefs wisely extended Spags. This was a no-brainer decision for the Chiefs after what Spagnuolo and the defense accomplished this season and since he's joined Kansas City, the defense hasn't been the weak link as it was early in Patrick Mahomes' career.
Chiefs get it right with Spagnuolo extension
Some might wonder why Spagnuolo wasn't approached by teams with head coaching vacancies and that's likely due to him already having a shot at being a head coach. Spags was the head coach of the St. Louis Rams from 2009 to 2011 and won just 10 games. He also took over the head coaching duties for the New York Giants in 2017 after the team parted ways with Ben McAdoo.
When the Chiefs (finally) moved on from Bob Sutton following the 2018 season, Spagnuolo was hired and the rest is history. He's done special things with this defense and now has four Super Bowl rings (he won one with the Giants in 2007, knocking off the undefeated Patriots) to show for it.
Way to go, Spags!
