The Kansas City Chiefs continue to search for answers at wide receiver from top to bottom as they rebuild much of that part of the roster. On Tuesday, the team swapped out fringe competitors aiming for a chance with the news that the Chiefs had signed a tryout player to a new deal.
The Chiefs apparently liked what they saw in Villanova wide receiver Jaaron Hayek. They signed him after watching him compete in a tryout role during rookie minicamp over the weekend. To make room, the Chiefs waived another recently signed undrafted free agent, Reggie Brown from James Madison.
The Chiefs have swapped out some wide receivers in order to give a tryout player a chance.
Hayek had 35 catches for 457 yards and 4 touchdowns a year ago for the Wildcats and put together 170 catches for 2,744 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns in his five year career there. Hayek dabbled in both kick and punt returns over the years but it was never central to his role while at Villanova.
Brown recently signed a rookie free agent deal with the Chiefs following the conclusion of the 2024 NFL Draft, held in late April. He was a First Team All-Sun Belt in 2023.
The Chiefs have remade the position this offseason in the wake of last year's frustrations with dropped passes, mental mistakes, and poor chemistry. It also hasn't helped that Rashee Rice has been the subject of multiple investigations which has clouded his potential availability.
The Chiefs have brought in Xavier Worthy via the draft and Marquise Brown in free agency, but there are multiple spots to fill from top to bottom as the team has also watched players like Mecole Hardman and Marquez Valdes-Scantling depart.
