The Kansas City Chiefs lost a rookie lineman late in the game against the Jaguars with a knee injury.
The Kansas City Chiefs didn't enjoy their best night on Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but no one should be too concerned considering it was a preseason game and the team's first exhibition of the year at that. While much of the 23-13 loss is easy to shake off, the Chiefs have some injury concerns to work out that will be harder to absorb.
One such injury was the loss of rookie free agent offensive lineman McKade Mettaeur, who came out of the game in the second half after having suffered a knee injury. Shortly after exiting the game, the Chiefs designated him as "out" for the rest of the contest.
The Chiefs looked at Mettauer's knee on the sidelines, working with head trainer Rick Burkholder, before ruling him out. Mettauer dealt with an ankle injury earlier in training camp as well.
The Chiefs have had quite a pipeline of offensive linemen from the Oklahoma Sooners in recent years. Not only did they trade for former OU left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. a few years ago, but recent drafts have brought center Creed Humphrey and tackle Wanya Morris. Mettaeur is the third Sooner lineman on the current Chiefs roster.
No one is sure of the severity of Mettauer's injury but the Chiefs might want to use this as a chance to stash a player on injured reserve in order to keep him around and see how he develops in the future. They've done the same in recent seasons with wide receiver Justyn Ross or defensive end Malik Herring.
Mettauer came to the Chiefs as a rookie free agent from Oklahoma with loads of experience (55 games) between his seasons with the Sooners and with Cal before that. He started all 13 games at right guard for Oklahoma a year ago.
