The Kansas City Chiefs were able to avoid significant injuries in their preseason-opening game against the New Orleans Saints, but that doesn't mean they were able to come away completely healthy. The Chiefs suffered one injured player of note with the news that cornerback Nic Jones fractured multiple fingers on Sunday afternoon.

The Chiefs were completely healthy coming into the fourth quarter, but Jones went down in the final minutes of the game with a hand injury after playing solid defense with the reps he was given. After the game, head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters and gave a more in-depth update on Jones's injury.

A timeline for Jones's potential return is still undetermined.

The Chiefs will be without their seventh-round pick for an undetermined amount of time going forward.

Jones was the Chiefs' seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft just a few months ago. A cornerback out of Ball State, Jones wasn't a heralded draft prospect but he rewarded the Chiefs' trust in him early and often in the team's rookie minicamp. From there, Jones has proven to be ultra-competitive for an active roster spot with a very impressive training camp.

The Chiefs are deeper at corner than most teams (and most positions) but the loss of Jones for a stretch along with the season-ending injury for Nazeeh Johnson definitely hurts the lower part of the depth chart.

Jones had 23 tackles, 12 passes deflected and 2 interceptions last season for Ball State.
