Chiefs news: Justin Reid returns to practice after suffering quad injury
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs secondary might be getting a bit healthier with the return of safety Justin Reid.
It was nice to see Justin Reid dress for the part on Monday coming down the hill at Missouri Western, because the Kansas City Chiefs safety hadn't worn a helmet in quite some time. Fortunately, the early sign that he might be healthy enough to practice once again was telling as Reid was back in action for the Chiefs on Monday.
The Chiefs returned to practice in St. Joseph for more of training camp following the team's first preseason game—a rather uninspired loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars—and a number of key Chiefs were missing due to injury in that game. Reid was one of them but now it looks like he's ready to get into game shape.
Reid has been sitting in camp due to a quad injury that he suffered before the Chiefs arrived in St. Joseph. That's been a bit of an open door for other young defensive backs, of which there are several, to earn more playing time, but it's also meant that assumed starters like Reid and Bryan Cook, who is also returning from a late-season injury, have yet to build any preseason chemistry.
As for Reid, he's in his third and final season of his contract, although the Chiefs could definitely extend it for another season or two depending how they feel about his role, future production, and the cast behind him. Reid, for his part, has been an exemplary leader in the locker room and has provided solid production and influence on the field as well. Reid set a career mark in total tackles last season with 95 in 16 starts.
The Chiefs play the Detroit Lions on Saturday at home at 3:00 p.m. C.T. in their second of three scheduled preseason games.
