The picture for the Kansas City Chiefs at wide receiver just got a little bit clearer on Wednesday with the surprising decision of John Ross to retire from professional football.

Per NFL reporter Mike Garafolo, Ross was placed by the team on the reserve/retired list.

Ross was one of two Rosses on the Chiefs roster this offseason who had fans excited at the position. Justyn Ross is a former star at Clemson who is trying to move past his injury-prone background, while John Ross was hoping to parlay his deep speed into a meaningful role with the Chiefs after trying with other teams like the Bengals and Giants.

The speedster John Ross has decided to officially hang up his cleats, per Mike Garafolo.

Ross came to the NFL with an incredible buzz after wowing fans and scouts at the NFL Combine back in 2017 where he set the record for the fastest ever 40-yard dash in 4.22 seconds. He was drafted by the Bengals at No. 9 overall in that 2017 NFL Draft, just one pick before the Kansas City Chiefs submitted Patrick Mahomes' name at No. 10 overall.

Without Ross, the wide receiver room is a bit less crowded although plenty of questions remain as the Chiefs search for playmakers to step up after losing Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster in free agency.

Ross had 62 catches for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns in his NFL career.
