One of the better free agent options remaining at cornerback has decided to ultimately call it career, as Steven Nelson has announced hire retirement from the National Football League.

Nelson broke the news to Houston's NBC affiliate KPRC over the weekend.

Nelson was a former third-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nelson first entered the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs as the team's third-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. The class itself was a very good one for former Chiefs general manager John Dorsey, which also included first-round pick Marcus Peters at corner, Mitch Morse at center, Chris Conley at wideout, and Rakeem Nunez-Roches at defensive tackle as a late-round find.

Nelson remained with the Chiefs for the entirety of his rookie deal and became a full-time starter in his second season. He finished his tenure in K.C. with 182 total tackles, 4 interceptions, 35 batted passes, and 1 forced fumble.

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed away Nelson in free agency in 2019 after the expiration of his deal with a three-year offer of over $25 million. He would start 30 games over two seasons in Pittsburgh but he requested the termination of his deal heading into his third year and the team agreed. He then signed a one year deal to play across the state with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Nelson would end his career by playing two more seasons with the Houston Texans, and he is calling it quits after a very good season in which he deflected 12 passes, intercepted 4, and enjoyed solid metrics per Pro Football Focus with a 71.9 overall grade. He also returned an interception 81 yards for a touchdown in the postseason for Houston this past winter.
