Chiefs news: Clyde Edwards-Helaire re-signs with Kansas City on one-year deal
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs continue to re-sign several of their own free agents this offseason in what has been a pretty soft market for many players. The latest player to return for another year is running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
Per reports, Edwards-Helaire re-signed with the Chiefs on Tuesday afternoon on a one-year deal that brings him back for a fifth season—an interesting move considering the Chiefs failed to exercise a fifth-year option on him a year ago.
The Chiefs have brought back Clyde Edwards-Helaire for a fifth season, per reports.
While terms of the deal are unknown as of press time, any deal for Edwards-Helaire is expected to be inexpensive given his run of production over the last four years.
Edwards-Helaire joined the Chiefs as a former first-round pick back in the 2020 NFL Draft. While he stayed with the team for the entirety of his rookie deal, Edwards-Helaire never lived up to the draft hype of being the first at his position taken overall and as the team's only first-round prospect since Patrick Mahomes was taken in 2017.
It was believed that Edwards-Helaire might be able to find a new home in free agency as an ideal change-of-scenery signing but that was clearly not the case in a market that was oversaturated with household names at the position—from Saquon Barkley to Derrick Henry to Tony Pollard to Josh Jacobs.
Last year, Edwards-Helaire had 70 carries for 223 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground for the Chiefs.
