Chiefs news: Andy Reid gives update on what to expect at left tackle

Anything can change at any time, but at the start of a new week in the NFL comes into view, it sounds like the Kansas City Chiefs are going with a bit of stability across the offensive line in Week 4.

On Sunday, the Chiefs changed the starting five up front—at least on the left side. Head coach Andy Reid decided to go with Wanya Morris at left tackle instead of Kingsley Suamataia after watching the latter start the first two games of the regular season—both wins against the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals.

At the end of the Chiefs' win over the Bengals in Week 2, Morris had replaced Suamataia who was having clear problems against pass rusher Trey Hendrickson (which most tackles will). That created a cloud of uncertainty about who would emerge as the starter there going forward and Morris won the call for Week 3 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Andy Reid spoke to the media about a number of subjects on Monday, including his assessment of the competition at left tackle.

At this point, it sounds like Morris will get the call again as the Chiefs remain on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

On Monday afternoon, Reid was asked about the job that Morris did in a primetime showing on Sunday Night Football. The Chiefs head coach had good things to say about both players and gave a likely answer as to who would be out there with the first-team unit on Sunday afternoon.

"I thought Wanya did some good things in there," said Reid. "So we’ll probably stick with that same thing. You saw where Kingsley rotated in and played some tight end and he was able to get some good reps in there. Then Wanya had some good reps at the left tackle spot."

The Chiefs drafted Suamataia in the second round of this year's draft on the heels of taking Morris in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, so both players lack experience at this stage. The Chiefs handed Suamataia as many reps as they could in the preseason, but that can only teach a player so much before they have to get in the trenches on an official game day.

"Look, do they both have stuff to work on? Yes. ... They're young guys," explained Reid. "They’re young guys in a tough position with a tough go here, and they’ve got another good one coming this week that they have to prep for … They’re surely getting tested early."

The Chiefs will visit the Chargers on Sunday, September 29 with kickoff scheduled for 3:25 p.m. CT.
