The Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens are set to kickoff the 2024 NFL regular season at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The game is slated to kickoff at 7:20 p.m. CST but unfortunately, warm-ups got cut short and fans are naturally wondering why that is.

Well, for those not in the Kansas City area or watching the pregame coverage, the game is being delayed due to weather. The players who were warming up on the field when lightning started to strike were ushered off in a hurry and the fans were urged to head to the concourses.

How long will the Chiefs-Ravens game be delayed?

Outdoor sports have to pause any activity if there's lightning in the area and there have been plenty of lightning strikes near Arrowhead Stadium. Until that lightning passes, no one will be taking the field in order to keep everyone safe.

With the downpour of rain that hit Arrowhead, not only will the players need to get out there and warm up (though both sides have reportedly agreed to a shortened warm-up) before the game begins but the field is going to have to be tended to. As Pete Sweeney tweeted out, the corner of the stadium is quite the pond as the rain continues to pound.

The Chiefs social media tweeted a picture of the stadium with the caption "The calm before the storm" and then quote tweeted to add that they didn't mean it literally. At least now we know who's to blame for this rude act from Mother Nature.

Fortunately, thunderstorms like this tend to pass through quickly in the Midwest so let's hope the delay isn't too long. We'll keep you updated when we hear anything.

Update: Fans can return to their seats and it appears that the plan is to allot for a 25-minute warm-up. Kickoff is tentatively scheduled for 7:40 p.m. CST.
