It's amazing how a player who wasn't signed until May as a rookie free agent—and even then wasn't a primary focus among the undrafted players who landed with the Kansas City Chiefs—has become such a sensation within the fan base. So goes the trajectory of former UCLA running back Carson Steele.
By now there's nary a soul in Chiefs Kingdom who is not familiar with the Chiefs' rookie back who is potentially bringing back the wrinkles available by having a fullback around on the roster—if he makes the active roster. The reasons he's turned heads are many, from his bulldozing running style to his exciting performance in the team's first preseason game, to his Townsend-esque locks.
Running back is a weak position for the Chiefs with very little proven production or even potential behind Isiah Pacheco. That's why it was so heartening to see Steele put on a bit of a physical rushing clinic against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium a week ago. It was a small sample size with only four rushes for 29 yards and a score, but it was head-turning nonetheless.
When back in training camp this week, the Chiefs were tasking Steele with more of a mental and physical workload than before to see if he could continue to separate himself from the pack—that includes the likes of Hassan Hall, Keaontay Ingram, and Emani Bailey. And that means all eyes are on him coming into the team's preseason game against the Detroit Lions at Arrowhead on Saturday.
Well if you wondered whether Carsonmania would continue for another week, just know that social media was already swooning over footage of Steele in pre-game warm-ups.
If I'm being honest, i've never looked remotely this cool or imposing doing anything in my entire life so I can understand the buzz. Let's just hope Chiefs Kingdom remains as passionate about Steele after the game because it will mean he played another solid game for a team that needs help at running back.
