Carson Steele could be enough to reintroduce fullback to the Chiefs roster

Remember when the Kansas City Chiefs implemented the fullback in their offense? Could Carson Steele be the next Chiefs fullback?

Remember when the Kansas City Chiefs implemented the fullback in their offense? Guys like Anthony Sherman and Michael Burton helped carve out a route for the running backs and would occasionally get touches of their own.

In 2023, Burton signed with the Broncos and the Chiefs opted to go without a fullback in their offense, which was a weird sight for Chiefs fans. Well, after a brief hiatus from the fullback position, it looks like head coach Andy Reid might consider keeping one on the roster again with the emergence of Carson Steele.

Steele played running back in college, starting out at Ball State in 2021 and 2022 and transferring to UCLA for the 2023 season. He rushed for at least 800 yards in each of his three collegiate seasons with the highlight being a 1,500+ yard campaign and 14 touchdowns in 2022 while playing for Ball State.

Earlier this spring, the Chiefs signed Steele as an undrafted free agent. During training camp, Reid was asked about Steele and if the team is thinking about reinstalling the fullback position.

"Steele is doing a nice job with that. I mean he's jumped in there and played fullback and he's been banging it in there with what we asked him to do and he's really not a fullback but he can also really do the other things. He's a big kid and he wants to, he's trying to make the team. He's had some real good snaps for us."

Will Chiefs add a fullback to their offense?

Steele is a bigger back who doesn't fit the look of what they look for in their running backs. Adding a fullback, however, could mean that the Chiefs are going to reintroduce some of the old offensive wrinkles that they implemented when Sherman and Burton were on the team.

Fullbacks aren't nearly as common in the NFL as they once were and that's because the league has become far more pass-happy than it used to be. The Chiefs have a talented group of running backs, led by Isiah Pacheco, but why not try to help them out as much as possible?

If Steele can step in and help their rushing attack be the best it can be, why not add a fullback and use some of those old rushing techniques? Also, with a name like Steele, he feels like a perfect fit at fullback.
