A brief history of the Kansas City Chiefs versus L.A. Chargers
By Matt Conner
The history of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers, two prominent teams in the National Football League (NFL), is a story of rivalry, triumph, and enduring fan support.
The Chiefs, originally known as the Dallas Texans, were founded in 1960 by Lamar Hunt. They played their inaugural season in Dallas before relocating to Kansas City in 1963. The team quickly found success, winning the AFL Championship in 1962 and appearing in the first Super Bowl in 1967, where they defeated the Minnesota Vikings. The Chiefs continued to be a strong franchise, known for their passionate fan base, iconic Arrowhead Stadium, and the famous "Loud and Proud" chant.
A short look back at a long series history between the Chiefs and Chargers.
On the other side, the Los Angeles Chargers, previously known as the San Diego Chargers, were established in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. Led by legendary quarterback Dan Fouts and other Hall of Fame players, the Chargers achieved considerable success in the 1970s and 1980s, consistently contending for playoff spots. The team moved to Los Angeles in 2017, hoping to capture the vast Southern California market.
Over the last 10 years, the scales have been radically tipped toward Kansas City's side—ever since Andy Reid was installed as the team's head coach in 2013. In their last 18 games, the Chiefs have won 15 of them and one of those games was a season-ending contest in which the Chiefs rested their starters.
The Chiefs and Chargers have had a historic rivalry, stemming from their early days in the AFL and carrying over into the NFL. Overall, the Chiefs now lead the overall series 67-57-1, although the Bolts own the lone postseason victory ever between the two franchises. Their matchups are highly anticipated, and battles between star quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert have only intensified the rivalry.
Both franchises have made substantial contributions to the NFL's history and continue to be contenders in their respective divisions, making the rivalry between the Chiefs and Chargers one of the most exciting and storied in professional football. As they face off each season, fans of both teams eagerly await the next chapter in this compelling football narrative.
