8 free agents who should top the Chiefs offseason wish list
Defensive End - A.J. Epenesa
I almost put Mike Danna in this spot, because I love how he developed into such an underrated player for the Chiefs that did the dirty work against the run, but also offered some occasional pass rush upside too. However, with Charles Omenihu's injury putting his status for the start of the season in jeopardy the Chiefs may want to spend that money on a player with a little more length and pass rush upside and I think that player could be A.J. Epenesa.
Epenesa stands 6'6" and weighs 260 pounds with long 34-inch arms. In other words, he has the length that Steve Spagnuolo covets and Epenesa could even kick inside some on clear passing downs (he could not hold up against the run there). Epenesa is still just 25 years old and totaled 6.5 sacks each of the past two seasons as a rotational player for the Buffalo Bills. Given the Bills' recent salary purge, it seems unlikely that they will be able to re-sign him.
Epenesa likely won't be super cheap, but Spotrac is estimating a 2-year deal for a total of about $11.3 million. If the Chiefs can find a way to make a deal like that work it would give them a nice pass rush piece to play while Omenihu is recovering and a four man rotation at edge of George Karlaftis, Omenihu, Epenesa, and Felix Anudike-Uzomah once he is back.
I'd be fine with bringing Danna back too, but I feel like the Chiefs need one more solid player in the edge rotation and Epenesa seems like a guy with some upside that fits what KC looks for at the position.
Linebacker - Nobody
Like at tight end, I just don't see anyone out there in free agency that is worth the cap space. With the Chiefs bringing back Drue Tranquill and having both Nick Bolton and Leo Chanel at the other two linebacker spots, their starters are set. I also like Cam Jones as a developmental guy coming off the bench. I also think bringing Jack Cochrane back as an exclusive rights free agent makes sense. I know the Chiefs are losing Willie Gay, but I think they have enough in-house to still remain strong at the position and can spend their money better elsewhere.
Now let's talk cornerback.
