5 under-the-radar free agents the KC Chiefs should target
Maurice Hurst, Defensive Tackle
No matter what happens with Chris Jones, this is a move that Brett Veach and Steve Spagnuolo should consider.
Maurice Hurst is an interesting story. Coming out of Michigan in 2018, he was projected to be a first round pick, but fell to the 5th round due a heart condition. Fortunately, that has not been an issue for him in the NFL.
Last season with Cleveland, Hurst was an excellent rotational defensive tackle for one of the most dominant defenses in football. He was stout against the run and provided some juice rushing the passer. If signed, he would instantly be the second-best defensive tackle on the Chiefs—or first depending on what happens with Chris Jones.
The main issue for Hurst has been his lengthy injury history in the NFL. With the 49ers in 2021 and 2022, he only appeared in two games due to calf and bicep injuries. His 2023 season with the Browns ended in Week 14 because of a pectoral injury. If the Chiefs bring him in, they need to be ready for him to not play a full season.
Despite the injury concerns, Hurts is definitely a risk worth taking. He won't be expensive, around $1.5M-$3M on a one-year deal, and has the upside to perfectly complement Chris Jones if he re-signs.
