5 Chiefs whose stock is a must-buy (and 3 must-sells) after preseason Week 2

The Chiefs played their second preseason game on Saturday vs the Detroit Lions and these players either helped or hurt their stock with their performance.

The Kansas City Chiefs played their second preseason game on Saturday against the Detroit Lions. It was the most significant of KC's three preseason games because it was the only one where their starters would see any significant amount of reps. That made it an important game for some players to claim roles or spots on the 53-man roster.

On our latest stock report, where we look at which Chiefs-related notions to buy or sell, is out and the good news is that I've got five players in the "buy" category and only three in my "sell" group. A few of these "buy" players have all but wrapped up their spots on the 53-man roster. However, for the players on the "sell" list, they are quickly running out of time to show that they're worthy of a spot or important role on this team.

Here's a look at the latest Chiefs stock report.

Buy: Xavier Worthy as an impact rookie

With Marquise "Hollywood" Brown out for a few weeks with an injury, it means that the Chiefs are going to need rookie first-round pick Xavier Worthy to come out of the gate swinging this season. He showed just that in extended playing time in the first half against the Lions.

Worthy caught 3 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown and also had one carry for 11 yards. One of his grabs was a nice third and long conversion from Patrick Mahomes and another was an impressive deep touchdown from Carson Wentz where he left his defender in his dust. If this game was any indication, it looks like Worthy is poised to be a major weapon for the Chiefs this season.

Sell: Kadarius Toney making the Chiefs

While Xavier Worthy looked like a major weapon in the offense on Saturday, it may have been the end of the line for another Chiefs receiver. After missing time with more injury issues and running with the third team in training camp, Kadarius Toney didn't change any opinions for the better in this game. He wasn't one of the special teams returners that flashed (both Nikko Remigio and Skyy Moore looked better as return men) and when he finally got on the field on offense he somehow managed to get two flags on one play. That play alone may just be enough to end his time in Kansas City.

Buy: Carson Steele making the Chiefs roster

It would be hard to say that Carson Steele's buzz could be "up" from last week when he was the talk of Chiefs Kingdom and had some of us wondering if Steele could be another in a long line of overhyped camp sensations. However, while Steele's performance against the Lions may not have produced the same highlight plays, it actually did more to lock up his roster spot.

Steele was the second running back to get snaps with the first-string offense and he played on all the major special teams units, including reeling off a 36-yard kick return. He played some fullback, caught a couple of passes, and on the long touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy (see the tweet from Geoff Schwartz below), stepped up and blocked a rusher. It's those little things that should make Steele a lock to make the 53-man roster.

Sell: Louis Rees-Zammit's odds of making the 53 man roster

While Carson Steele has proven he can maximize his roster spot by contributing to the team in multiple ways, Louis Rees-Zammit still very much looks like a player who needs more time to learn the sport. While LRZ is still getting run out as one of the team's first kick returners, he wasn't one of the most impressive doing so. Nikko Remigio, Skyy Moore, and even Steele all had longer kick returns than Rees-Zammit. He also didn't have a single offensive touch in this game. At this point, it seems like he's fighting for a practice squad spot, not a spot on the active roster.

Buy: Matt Araiza as more than just a big leg

When the Chiefs brought in Matt Araiza when Tommy Townsend left in free agency, there was no question about his leg strength. Araiza can definitely boom the ball deep down the field. The real question was whether or not he could be accurate enough to pin teams back. Well, his performance on Saturday was a positive sign that he will be able to do just that.

Araiza ended the day with six punts with an average of 49.2 yards, including four punts that he put inside the 20-yard line. If Araiza can continue to combine his strong leg with that kind of accuracy the Chiefs may have stumbled upon a Pro Bowl-caliber punter at a major discount.

Sell: FAU as impact player

Just like the first preseason game against the Jags, Felix Anudike-Uzomah got a lot of playing time against reserve offensive linemen. Just like last week, the results weren't good enough to inspire a lot of hope for this season.

That's not to say that FAU is terrible or that he can't be a part-time role player on the Chiefs roster this season. He can be a situational pass rusher who might get a few sacks here and there. However, with Charles Omenihu rehabbing an injury, the Chiefs really need FAU to give them starting-caliber reps. The problem is that he just isn't very good against the run, and while he did flash on a few pass rush plays, you would have liked for him to show more going against second-string tackles.

Buy: Truman Jones making the 53-man roster

You can argue that Truman Jones had a better game than Felix Anudike-Uzomah on Saturday. While the difference wasn't huge, the fact that FAU is a guy that K.C. is counting on for production and Jones is fighting to make the roster makes you realize how much the investment a team puts into a player affects their status.

I'm not saying Jones deserves FAU's snaps, but he flashed enough pass-rushing potential that the Chiefs should keep him around and potentially try mixing him in with the starters here and there to see how he responds.

Buy: Curtis Jacobs making the 53-man roster

The Chiefs have several linebackers fighting for one or two spots on the active roster. Jack Cochrane has one of those spots locked up. The other is likely going to be one of the following: Cam Jones, Curtis Jacobs, Cole Christiansen, or Swayze Bozeman.

While Bozeman had a pretty solid day on Saturday as well, Jacobs stood out as the guy with the best upside of the group. Jacobs showed better change of direction and closing speed than the other three linebackers listed.

On one play in particular, Jacobs exploded into the backfield to tackle the running back for a loss. If the Chiefs already have one reserve linebacker who knows the defense well (Cochrane), the smart play is to pair him with the guy with the highest potential. Based on what I saw on Saturday, that man is Jacobs.

So there you have it Chiefs fans, those are my eight players that either boosted or hurt their stock on Saturday against the Lions. So what do you think? Do you agree with this list or do you think I'm wrong on one of these guys? Is there anyone else that you think should have been on this list (good or bad) over somebody else? I'd love to read your thoughts in the comments below.
