Drue Tranquill, LB

Just as JuJu Smith-Schuster signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs a year ago in order to join a Super Bowl contender and re-establish his value in free agency, Drue Tranquill might be the same sort of signing—albeit on the other side of the ball.

After the Chiefs landed Tranquill in free agency, general manager Brett Veach stated that the Chiefs were surprised by the fact that Tranquill was out there and that the price tag was amenable. The end result, for a year at least, is the deepest linebacking corps the Chiefs have had in at least a decade.

Looking beyond 2023, however, the Chiefs are likely going to be a one-and-done scenario for Tranquill in the heart of the defense.

Tranquill already had a breakout season in 2023 with the Chargers and showed he can be an impressive two-way player in the middle. Last year he was only the primary communicator on defense and had 146 tackles to lead the Chargers.

Now if he can turn heads again for a contender in several primetime matchups, he could earn himself a much bigger paycheck next spring.
