The Kansas City Chiefs never like heading into a draft with an explicit need. The defending Super Bowl champions addressed their short-term future at wide receiver by signing Hollywood Brown on a one-year deal, leaving little glaring holes on the Chiefs roster for 2024.

Do they need future talent and depth all across the 53-man roster? Yes, absolutely. But, their 2024 NFL Draft is no longer wide receiver or bust in the first round.

General manager Brett Veach and drafting near each round's end go together like peanut butter and jelly. Kansas City hasn't drafted above 21st overall since Veach took control of the team, and their drafting cornerback Trent McDuffie in 2022 was the only time the Chiefs drafted above 30th overall period. Such is the life of a perennial contender.

The Chiefs kept most of their championship-winning band together this offseason, but they cannot afford to miss on this year's draft. Armed with seven total picks, Kansas City has the final first-round selection this year at 32nd overall. If only Miami was stupid enough to lose their first-round pick again.

The Kansas City Chiefs need some luck and strategy at 32nd overall.

The Chiefs, under Veach's management, haven't maximized their potential first-round selections in recent years. Sure, McDuffie and defensive end George Karlaftis are solid picks, but the jury is still out on defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire is looking for a new home. .500 is a great batting average, but is it a good hit rate on first-round picks? That is debatable.

No matter how you think Veach and company have done in the draft, no one disagrees that Kansas City needs a good draft while pursuing the illustrious three-peat. They must avoid these three players if they want to start the draft on the right note and end the season with a solid 2024 draft class.
