3 coaches who could be pried away from Kansas City Chiefs
By Matt Conner
Steve Spagnuolo
If you did a double-take here when you read the words "Steve Spagnuolo", we understand. After all, Spags is not an assistant coach. He's also at retirement age, has been a head coach before, and seems settled long-term into his current role as defensive coordinator for the Chiefs.
But we'd be remiss if we didn't at least mention Spagnuolo in the conversation here of coaches who "could" be poached by another team, because the desires of NFL owners come in all shapes and sizes and it's possible that one of them would want what Spags could bring them.
Consider this: Spags has been a proven defensive mind for more than a generation in the NFL with some of the most successful franchises in that period. He's seen it all and prepared for it all, and some teams who've often gone with the young, sexy pick time and again to take over their team might be reticent to go the same route again.
For a team that could use some proven veteran leadership to pull them out of years of misery, a hire like Spagnuolo could be just what the doctor ordered. He'd immediately raise the defensive floor for any team that's a mess on that side of the ball. Spags also seems like a leader who knows what he doesn't know, so you could expect his offensive coordinator to rule his kingdom with some autonomy. That could lead to a strong partnership at the top.
Spagnuolo is still passionate even into his mid-sixties and players say they love to play for him. With a few Super Bowl rings to his credit, he'd be a surprise hire for some team but there are reasons to believe that he could be the guy in the right situation.
