1. Blockbuster Trade Idea #2: The Tyler Smith Deal

Chiefs trade: Willie Gay, LB; Donovan Smith, OT; 4th round pick (2024)
Cowboys trade:
Tyler Smith, OT

This is borderline inconceivable as the Cowboys are head-over-heels in love with Tyler Smith, but this hypothetical fulfills a 2022 draft cycle dream of mine: The Smith Brother's Pancake House.

Tulsa product Tyler Smith has a mean streak that is only second only to Trey Smith. The two of them on the same offensive line would make for primetime viewership in the trenches. The receivers have taken nearly all of the blame so far for the lack of tempo in the offense, but the tackle play has been suspect at best. Jawaan Taylor's interest from referee crews aside, the overall combined performance of himself and Donovan Smith has been underwhelming.

Willie Gay is in a contract year, and while he and Nick Bolton are dynamic together, it is unlikely that they'll both be retained. With Bolton the leader of the defense, and due for an extension of his own next season, he has to take priority. Gay has been awesome as both a pass rusher and a coverage backer, but the offseason signing of Drue Tranquill gives the Chiefs flexibility to shop the linebacker.

The Cowboys have gotten off to a special start of their own, and disassembling continuity on the offensive line is never advisable. However, the Chiefs might have enough to convince them here with a veteran replacement at tackle, a linebacker who will start immediately, and a little extra juice via some draft capital.

Securing further longevity and improving the overall play of the offensive line could be all it takes to optimize the offense.
