There are pros and cons—or at least positive and negative consequences—to everything, and that's true even with the return of offensive lineman Trey Smith and tight end Travis Kelce for another season.
News leaked that the Chiefs were set to use the franchise tag on Smith on Thursday, which changes course from previous reports by Nate Taylor of The Athletic that the team would not use a tag of any kind on the right guard. Instead, the increased salary cap gave general manager Brett Veach more room to move and the team decided to use that to retain their Pro Bowl lineman.
As for Kelce, he made the announcement himself via his New Heights podcast with his brother, Jason Kelce, on social media after Pat McAfee put out the earliest reports that Kelce was indeed returning for a thirteenth season.
What does all of this mean for the Chiefs? With so much money involved, how will this affect their ability to remake other parts of the roster? Will the Chiefs be able to reach a long-term deal with Smith or are they wanting to tag-and-trade him like L'Jarius Sneed? What does this mean for any offensive remake?
