The Kansas City Chiefs opened free agency with a bang, signing Kenneth Walker to revamp their run game. That was definitely the highlight of free agency but, overall, the Chiefs did well in the first week of free agency.
Gordon McGuinness of PFF graded all 32 teams' first weeks of free agency and gave the Chiefs a respectable B grade. This feels fair, as the Walker signing was a massive move for this team but they still haven't brought in help at cornerback, which is a glaring need for them after the Trent McDuffie trade and Jaylen Watson also departing for Los Angeles this offseason.
Chiefs receive B grade for free agency moves so far
The other big moves K.C. made was re-signing Travis Kelce and Tyquan Thornton while bringing in newcomers Khyiris Tonga and Alohi Gilman. Kelce and Thornton return to help the offense while Tonga and Gilman are pickups for Steve Spagnuolo's defense.
While McGuinness didn't write a blurb detailing his overall grade, he did provide brief write-ups for every key free agent signing. He liked the Walker signing, as did the majority of people, but was a little critical of the Tonga signing.
"Tonga played a career-high 415 snaps for the Patriots in 2025, although his middling production — 17 quarterback pressures and 15 run stops — likely isn't worth $7 million per year."
That was probably the most critical comment on any of the Chiefs free agent signings from McGuinness here but it explains why he didn't give Kansas City an A- or even a B+. He thinks the Chiefs overpaid for Tonga.
Still, a B grade is solid and the Chiefs hit major needs while also keeping some key players in Kansas City as well. As for the rest of the division, McGuinness gave the Broncos a C, the Chargers a B, and the Raiders an A- so the Chiefs are in line with what the rest of the AFC West has been doing so far.
