Yesterday marked the first of three draft days, which is likely the most important weekend of the offseason for the Chiefs. With two first-round picks, the Kansas City Chiefs came out of day one with their top target in Mansoor Delane after a trade up with the Browns to pick 6. But arguably the best pick of night one came with pick 29, when the Chiefs landed top DT prospect Peter Woods.
Coming into the season, Woods was a consensus top-10 pick, and nearly everyone saw him as the top defensive tackle prospect in the draft. But after a lackluster season from Clemson, Woods' stock took a substantial hit as people wondered just how much impact he really made. But on draft day, the Chiefs recognized the talent Woods had and did not hesitate to put the pick in to land another top defensive lineman to play across from Chris Jones.
Peter Woods is a NIGHTMARE against the run…

Clemson football was a dumpster fire this season, and it is easy to come away concerned about the impact that some of their top prospects were making. But while watching the film, my confidence in Woods only grew stronger as offenses consistently doubled him and shifted the defense toward him. Opposing coaches knew Woods' skills and constantly had to adjust to prevent him from taking over the game.
Woods also saw his stock take a hit when his measurements did not come in as expected, and weighing in below 300 pounds with less than 32-inch arms raised concerns. His testing numbers also did not raise confidence in his NFL potential, but the way he moved at his pro day alleviated a lot of those concerns for me. It is also worth noting that many players slim down for the combine, hoping to move faster, and Woods likely plays closer to 310 pounds.
When you watch the film of Woods over the last two years, you will come away impressed with his relentless motor and versatility to line up all across the line. He is a polished player with a wide range of pass-rush moves that he can use consistently to get to the quarterback. Woods' power comes straight from his lower half, and he knows how to use his legs to get into the chest of opposing linemen and force them back into the QB's lap.
In awe of the fact that 315 pound Clemson DT Peter Woods played 30.8% of his snaps last year on the edge and never look out of place.

Woods' movement skills are incredible, and he does an impressive job working the shoulder of opposing guards and working across their face to win laterally. His hands are violent and effective, allowing him to make first contact and get early leverage. He is also very effective in the run game, with the discipline to clog up his lane, complemented by great tackling skills and a relentless motor to fight back to the ball sideline to sideline.
The Chiefs love to have versatility on their defense, and Woods brings that in bunches. Clemson has lined Woods up anywhere from 0- to 5-tech on their defensive line consistently over the last two years. This is something Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will love to have, and it takes a lot of pressure off superstar defensive tackle Chris Jones, whom the Chiefs have heavily leaned on over the last several years.

Woods being available at 29 is a gift for the Chiefs, and following the first day of the draft, they have immediately added two members to their rebuilding defense. Woods and Delane are both top talents, and based on my board, the Chiefs came out of the draft with two top-15 players in the class. To put it simply, Peter Woods was a superstar defensive tackle, and the Chiefs got a steal at pick 29.
Now we head into day two of the draft, where the Chiefs will likely shift their focus to the offensive side of the ball after adding two key starters on defense and still holding five more picks in this year's draft. If you are wondering who will go next, take a look at my best available players as we head into day two of the draft!
