Patrick Mahomes becomes Chiefs all-time leader in touchdown passes
By Matt Conner
It was inevitable that someday Patrick Mahomes would occupy the top spot of the Kansas City Chiefs all-time list for passing touchdowns. It's just amazing how quickly it's come about in his still-young career in the National Football League.
With his 6-yard throw to Justin Watson in the second quarter against the Raiders in Week 13, Mahomes has now officially supplanted the great Len Dawson as No. 1 on the Chiefs' all-time leaderboard for passing scores.
The great Len Dawson has finally lost his spot atop the Chiefs all-time passing TD leader list.
Mahomes was able to tie Dawson with a short throw to the back of the end zone to find DeAndre Hopkins against the Carolina Panthers in Week 12, giving him No. 237 in his career.
Mahomes is only in his seventh season as a starting quarterback in the NFL and has 106 regular-season starts total to his name. For Dawson, who played in a very different era of football, it required 183 total games over 14 seasons to arrive at 237 touchdown passes—a span of time from 1962 to 1975.
Already the team's all-time passing yards leader with well over 30,000, Mahomes is now the owner of every meaningful quarterback stat in Chiefs history including completions (2,625), attempts (3,934), passing yards (30,828), and game-winning drives (20).
The fall is a precipitous one after the top tandem of Mahomes and Dawson. Trent Green is No. 3 on the Chiefs all-time touchdowns list for quarterbacks with 118, or just under half of Dawson's number. Bill Kenney is next at No. 4 (105 TDs) and then Alex Smith at No. 5 (102).
