Rewind back to the Kansas City Chiefs' preseason in 2024. One of the hottest names on the roster was running back Carson Steele, who the team had signed as an undrafted free agent after the draft had wrapped up.
Steele showed toughness in the preseason and ended up making the Chiefs roster. He ended up appearing in all 17 regular season games and made three starts while rushing for 183 yards in those games. He fumbled three times, which was certainly something about him that frustrated the fan base and it was clear by the end of the season that he wasn't going to be the guy at running back moving forward.
Steele didn't make the roster in 2025 and spent the entirety of the season on the practice squad. Now that the Chiefs' season is officially over, however, Steele has decided to take his talents elsewhere. According to Tom Pelissero, "Steele is signing a futures deal with the Eagles".
Eagles take flyer on Carson Steele after Chiefs experiment fizzles out
The Eagles already have one of the best running backs in the game in Saquon Barkley but let's not kid ourselves here - Steele won't be competing with Barkley for snaps. Perhaps Philadelphia thinks it can harness his true potential and get out of him what Kansas City couldn't. Crazier things have happened after all.
Either way, it's a bummer that it didn't work out for Steele in Kansas City but he had his shot to show what he could do and never stood out enough. Maybe he'll get a chance to do that in Philly or maybe he'll just become another name on their roster. Time will tell.
