The Kansas City Chiefs still got their plays from top performers like Travis Kelce and Kenneth Walker III in Miami. However, it was not as dominant of a day as some anticipated against the Dolphins and their inexperienced defense. There were a lot of moments where the Chiefs kept things basic. But also, too many plays of no gain or negative yards popped up more than one would have guessed.
This led to some players needing to step up as depth pieces. Only a small portion did for the Chiefs' offense. But one name should not go unnoticed, even if his stat line was not of monstrous proportion.
That would be tight end Noah Gray. When looking back at the performance against the Dolphins, Gray truly had a notable impact. If not for some of his plays, Kansas City may have failed to extend drives or their lead in certain moments. Additionally, the Chiefs' quarterback felt comfortable when targeting Gray, as other answers led to shaky results.
Gray sees best receiving day in two seasons
Gray finished the day with three catches and 39 receiving yards. His longest grab was 24 yards. It was the first time he had amassed at least 39 receiving yards in a game since 2024.
Most notably, Gray made a tight grab in a contested situation against former Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay Jr. There was not a lot of room for Patrick Mahomes to fit the ball in for Gray on that play. However, the tight end earned the trust of the quarterback to throw it up. It allowed Gray an opportunity to outwork the defender in a close one-on-one matchup.

He displayed excellent patience and ball-tracking ability. Gray also has the strength and mass to box defenders out and shield the ball from an opponent's grasp.
In another chance, Gray made a grab where he set himself up quickly as an easy outlet for Mahomes underneath. This allowed the K.C. signal caller to hit him around the sticks, and Gray was left in open space to rumble for a healthy gain after the catch. Simple plays like that became essential for the Chiefs on Sunday as their offensive line gave up some pressures and quarterback hits.
Gray can be safety blanket against pressure and on quick throws
The effort of Gray is always present. He provides that as a reliable blocker. And in certain contested or jump-ball situations, Mahomes can just loft it up and hope that Gray is the only one to come down with it.
If Gray remains a consistent underneath safety valve on quick throws or against pressure, that can allow Kansas City to maintain its efficient start on offense. The Chiefs certainly have their fair share of questions at wide receiver. Seeing them make an outside addition at that spot is still very possible during the season.
But at tight end, Kansas City understands how dependable its room is. Gray should not be viewed as just a blocker in this offense. Can he use the outing in Miami to increase his opportunities and receiving production?
