One would think that after seeing the Kansas City Chiefs dominate the AFC West for nearly a decade, that they'd be a lock to be the favorites the next year. Well, every year, at least one talking head falls into the trap of picking a team not named the Chiefs. It won't surprise anyone to hear that Colin Cowherd is the latest talking head to do just that.
Cowherd was concerned for the Chiefs this year, especially after losing Joe Thuney and signing Jaylon Moore to be their left tackle. Cowherd questioned if this was the end of the Chiefs' dynastic run.
“By the way, they're not going to go 11-0 in one-score games. Raiders are better, Broncos will be better, the Chargers will be better. It never lasts forever.”
Colin Cowherd apparently never learns his lesson picking against Chiefs
What's funny to me here is that people said this about K.C. during the 2023 season and the team went on to win its second straight Super Bowl and third in a five-year span. People said the same crap last year too and while the Chiefs didn't complete the three-peat, they still made it to the Super Bowl after going 15-2 in the regular season and clinching the AFC's number one seed.
Well, as expected, Kansas City homer Nick Wright put Cowherd in his place here and set things straight.
“This is an annual tradition,” Wright shot back at Cowherd, “where you pick a new team to win the AFC West and then, midway through the year, you're like, ‘Yeah, I probably shouldn't have done that.’
Wright didn't just leave it there, however.
“Also, you said the Chiefs didn't want to lose Joe Thuney. What, was there a gun to Brett Veach's head when he called the Bears and traded him? They didn't lose Joe Thuney; they traded Joe Thuney. So, I just got to say the rest of your bracket feels a lot like we are respecting the teams that were really good last year, except for of course, the Chiefs.”
Wright is absolutely correct here. Every year Cowherd (and other people) say the dynasty is finally going to crumble and that's yet to happen (knock on wood). How long will it take before Cowherd walks back these statements this time?
