NFL draft analyst has concerns about Chiefs' first-rounder Peter Woods

It's not that Dane Brugler doesn't see the upside in Peter Woods, but he just wants to see more.

For the first time in a long time, the Kansas City Chiefs had possession of a top-10 pick in the NFL draft, originally owning the No. 9 overall pick in this year's edition after an abysmal 6-11 finish to the 2025 campaign.

The Chiefs obviously didn't stick to that slot, swapping picks with the Cleveland Browns and also sending away a third-rounder and a fifth-rounder in order to move up three spots to No. 6, where they selected LSU superstar Mansoor Delane, who most believed to be the best cornerback in this class.

But Delane, of course, wasn't the only player Kansas City added that first night, as the organization also owned the No. 29 overall selection in the opening round, which came from the Los Angeles Rams in the Trent McDuffie trade, and used it to take Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods.

While the Chiefs may not have needed to trade up to get Delane, the general consensus is that the pick is an absolute home run. But not everybody is 100 percent sold on Woods just yet, and among those thinking that way is Senior NFL Draft Analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic, who recently said that while he likes the selection overall, he simply wants to see more.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic wonders why Peter Woods is still a caterpillar instead of a butterfly

During a recent appearance on the Up & Adams Show, Brugler was asked by host Kay Adams for his thoughts on Kansas City's draft class, and when it came to Woods, he admitted that he has some concerns.

"Peter Woods will be interesting because he has all the talent in the world," Brugler said. "It's just I want to see it more. Why are you still a caterpillar and not yet a butterfly? That's my question with Peter Woods because you do see the talent.

"And when you grade to the flashes, I understand why he was a first-round pick. Now it's up to those coaches to get the most out of him. He actually had more rushing yards last year than he did pressures. That's not exactly ideal for a defensive tackle."

For those wondering on the exact numbers to which Brugler was referring, Woods tallied 15 rushing yards on eight attempts and actually scored a pair of touchdowns. But he did only record 14 total pressures and 2.0 sacks. So, that assessment was accurate.

But as Brugler says, the talent Woods possesses from an overall standpoint is undeniable. For as big as the 6-foot-2, 298-pounder is, his first step off the line is as quick as can be, and he's obviously got plenty of strength behind that massive frame. He does have a tendency to gamble a bit too often by attempting to undercut opposing offensive linemen and shooting gaps instead of staying within the scheme. So, Steve Spagnuolo is going to have to reel him in a bit.

While Woods may not make the immediate impact that fans are hoping for, this was still a solid selection, and the Chiefs are obviously hoping he can be one of the cornerstones of the defense for years to come.
