This is going to be yet another interesting offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs. One big question that needs to be addressed is the offense, which was lackluster even before Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL. While the blame isn't solely on Matt Nagy, who holds the offensive coordinator title, he certainly deserves part of the blame for how poorly the unit has performed in 2025.

Even with Nagy's less-than-stellar track record since coming back to Kansas City, his name is still being mentioned in the head coaching rumor mill. Most recently, Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano of ESPN brought up the Chiefs offensive coordinator as a candidate that could likely land a head coaching gig this offseason.

Fowler: "I'm expecting Kansas City offensive coordinator Matt Nagy to be in the mix in Tennessee (and possibly elsewhere)."
Graziano: "I've heard Nagy's name a lot; it was thrown around in connection with the Titans job seemingly within the first few minutes after Brian Callahan was fired."

Matt Nagy resurfacing in coaching cycle feels baffling to Chiefs fans

It continues to be quite a surprise that Nagy is in the mix for a head coaching job. Not only has his return to Kansas City been underwhelming but it's not as though he was a stud during his first stint as a head coach.

Nagy was hired as the Bears head coach in 2018 and had a nice first year in Chicago, leading the Bears to a 12-4 record and an NFC North title. Unfortunately, that's where the success ended. The Bears went 8-8 in 2019 and 2020, and the 6-11 record in 2021 ultimately doomed Nagy, as he was relieved of his coaching duties at the end of the season.

Nagy returned to Kansas City the year after the Bears fired him, serving as the quarterbacks coach in 2022 before getting promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023. That's the position he's held ever since with mixed results.

The Titans are the team that Fowler and Graziano linked Nagy with and considering how poorly the Brian Callahan experiment went, this just doesn't make a lot of sense. I get that the Titans want to find someone that can help Cam Ward succeed but what has Nagy done to prove he's that guy?

Chiefs fans probably won't be sad if Nagy does get hired elsewhere, as it'd mean that someone else would come in to be their offensive coordinator. A new offensive coordinator could hopefully lead to a more productive offense, something that the Chiefs have been severely lacking in recent years.
