The Kansas City Chiefs will be on their bye week next weekend. After a challenging stretch of games to open the season, the team will look to finish strong after returning from a week off.
Patrick Mahomes has been playing an exciting brand of football so far this season. His added aggressiveness and downfield accuracy have helped to elevate the Chiefs' offense compared to the last couple of seasons. But for the Kansas City quarterback, his week off may not be entirely free of football.
College GameDay announced Saturday night that they will be heading to Mahomes' alma mater, Texas Tech, next weekend. ESPN's long-running Saturday morning show is a traditional favorite among football fans. Texas Tech will host BYU in a game with high stakes near the top of the Big 12 Conference.
Patrick Mahomes could spend his bye week back in Lubbock as College GameDay heads to Texas Tech
It seems like many of the College GameDay hosts were hoping for a Texas Tech victory over Kansas State on the first Saturday of November. Specifically, Kirk Herbstreit was looking forward to going to Lubbock if everything fell just right.
Part of the reason for that was how rare it has been for Texas Tech to get College GameDay. But also, the chance to have an active, multiple Super Bowl-winning quarterback on the show would be massive for College GameDay. If Mahomes were the guest picker during the predictions segment of the show, it would be the second straight week that the guest picker was a one-time Chiefs quarterback.
Alex Smith was in the guest picker chair to open November. His alma mater, Utah, played host to Cincinnati. Smith even joked on the show that he lost a friendly bet to Mahomes when Texas Tech won at Utah earlier in the season.
Another subplot of the Texas Tech–BYU matchup involves Mahomes and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. Reid’s alma mater, BYU, will be looking to stay undefeated by beating the Red Raiders. But if Texas Tech defeats the Cougars, it will leave each team with one loss going into the last few weeks of the college football regular season. Surely, Mahomes will acknowledge Reid’s ties to BYU if he appears on College GameDay.
For Chiefs fans, it is still awe-inspiring to see the many different things that Kansas City players are involved with now. On an entertainment level, the stars may just end up aligning perfectly: Mahomes on his bye week, his alma mater enjoying one of their best seasons in a while. If Mahomes ends up appearing on the show, an official announcement could come by the end of this week.
