When it comes to drafting defensive linemen on Day 2 or Day 3, the range of outcomes narrows significantly. Occasionally, there are those rare lottery tickets that do hit, but for the most part, teams are looking for role players who can contribute throughout their rookie contract. LT Overton is the type of prospect that never reached the ceiling he was once projected to hit, but his floor might make him a value pick on Day 2 or 3.

The Chiefs have often used "tweener" type bodies on the defensive line. Guys who are oversized edges and can kick inside as a pass rusher on late downs. The value of having a player like that is similar to what the Chiefs had in Mike Danna on his rookie contract. While his extension wasn't worth the investment, he was a home run pick for where he was drafted, given the snaps the Chiefs got from him.

Every roster needs ditch diggers; adding depth also helps create a rotation to keep the best pass rushers fresh for the biggest moments.

Lebbeus Thomas “LT” Overton grew up in College Station, Texas. He was around the Crimson Tide early as a boy, as his mother was the assistant athletic director at Alabama. He attended a high-level private high school in Georgia, Bessemer Academy, where he played basketball and football and was also a 4.0 student. He was a consensus 5-star recruit and the #3 defensive line recruit in the nation. He spent the first two years of his career at Texas A&M alongside other top recruits Shemar Stewart and Walter Nolen. After the passing of Jimbo Fisher, he entered the transfer portal and committed to Alabama to complete his college career.

LT Overton's strengths

Power

Dense frame that is compact and strong in the lower half. Rarely gets moved off the line of scrimmage.

Versatiltiy

Lined up all across the defensive line and asked to play a number of roles in two different defensive schemes. Can shade inside to a 3- or 2-technique and as a 5-technique as well. Also an effective stunter and looper.

Motor

Never shuts down a rep, always pursues, continues to push the pocket. Varies pass rush moves as counters if he's not winning the rep early.

LT Overton's weaknesses

Pass Rush

Very few wins on the edge as a pass rusher, with 7 career sacks in 4 years as a starter. Not sudden off the snap, little to no bend.

Tweener Body

Is he versatile or a player without a home? He's undersized to be a defensive tackle and too big to be a consistent threat on the edge. The team that drafts him will need a vision for how to best use him.

Gap Discipline

Has some reps where he is getting out of rush lane integrity and it ends up in a big run. Needs to keep his head up throughout the rush to keep his eyes engaged.

LT Overton's fit in Kansas City

Despite disappointing production and modest pass-rush skills, Overton is a high-level fit for the Chiefs defense. If you are a fan hoping the Chiefs might be able to bring more speed off the edge after this draft, Overton is the type of player who allows you to get to 3rd and long. He's likely never going to rack up sacks unless he refines his pass rush on the inside. However, his power and heavy hands should make him a useful part of a defensive line rotation.

Overton is a versatile, stout defensive lineman with a strong base, long arms, and the power to control the point of attack, hold up against double teams, and walk blockers backward with a bull rush. Plays with ruggedness, active hands, and good balance, showing scheme flexibility and the ability to execute stunts, though he lacks top-tier burst, snap anticipation, and lateral quickness as a pass rusher. Projects as a dependable, high-effort rotational piece whose impact is limited by a tweener build, inconsistent shed/counter timing, and low ability to generate quick pressure.
