Longtime Chiefs executive seen as top option for Jets' general manager job
A general manager spot is now officially open. The New York Jets have created a GM vacancy, firing Joe Douglas on Tuesday. With the 2024 season winding down, teams that are out of contention are obviously looking towards the future. And per usual, the general manager openings will be highly anticipated by fans whose team is making a change.
While there will be many candidates interviewed by the Jets for their GM spot, there is one particular name that has already entered that realm. That would be Mike Borgonzi of the Kansas City Chiefs front office. Of course, many other teams could look towards the Chiefs organization to help steer them to success, given the dominant championship run that Kansas City has been on.
This is not the first time that Mike Borgonzi's name has come up for general manager vacancies. But in this upcoming offseason, specifically, more buzz is surrounding Borgonzi. What could his professional history mean for Jets fans, if New York were to hire him? His experience could be just what an organization like New York needs moving forward.
Mike Borgonzi Brings Deep Experience Across Different Roles
Mike Borgonzi currently holds the title of assistant general manager in Kansas City. This year is his 16th season with the Chiefs. Borgonzi has now been assistant GM in KC for four seasons. Beforehand, he held roles like Director of Football Operations and Director of Player Personnel. Besides being part of Super Bowl winners, Borgonzi has been in the rare position of working in an organization with the great Andy Reid. While working with Chiefs general manager Brett Veach, Boronsdf has also experienced things like transitioning to a new, young quarterback, as well as extensions at the top of the market for a roster's best players.
Teams Have Interviewed Borgonzi In The Past
Just last offseason, the Washington Commanders requested to interview Mike Borgonzi for their general manager job. Washington clearly went in a different direction. Adam Peters was hired by the Commanders out of the San Francisco 49ers front office.
As mentioned above, the recent success of Kansas City has certainly made Mike Borgonzi a hot name each offseason. But with being requested for interviews, specifically, teams have had him on their radar for the work he has helped with as well. In a year where it feels like a lot of teams could be making changes, the Jets will have an early head start on possibly looking deeper into Borgonzi's background.
Schefter mentions Borgonzi as candidate
It is one thing for fans of the Jets to list who they wish gets hired as new general manager or head coach. But as New York's campaign has crumbled, different reports and connections have been made to Mike Borgonzi being a top option for the Jets.
On Tuesday's episode of The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN's Adam Schefter listed Mike Borgonzi as a name to watch for general manager in New York. On the other hand, Connor Rogers of NBC Sports named Borgonzi as a top option he would be a big fan of for the Jets on an episode of the NFL Stock Exchange podcast.
In the end, many other options will be viewed as credible for the vacancy of Jets general manager. But with increased buzz, could this finally be the year that Borgonzi lands a lead gig?
