Leo Chenal earns Special Teams Player of the Week for late-game heroics
By Matt Conner
Leo Chenal is having himself quite a week.
In the aftermath of his late-game heroics against the Denver Broncos, Chenal has been the talk of Chiefs Kingdom and everyone all over the league has ben celebrating his exemplary play and championing his efforts with praise.
The latest honor comes from the official league offices in the form of the conference players of the week. While it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, Chenal has been named the AFC's Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 10.
It turns out that if you block a field goal to save a win at the last second against a bitter rival, it will earn you some accolades.
For those who missed the excitement, Chenal and the Chiefs hosted the Denver Broncos in Week 10 for the first of their two scheduled divisional games this year as rivals. The Broncos came in at 5-4 with the hopes to gain ground on the Chiefs in the AFC West standings and prove they belonged in the conversation about contention.
The Chiefs were the NFL's lone unbeaten team and were hoping to move past the Broncos in order to maintain all margin leading up to their big showdown in Week 11 against the Buffalo Bills.
As it turns out, Denver was the team that was ready to play from the outset and they made life miserable for Kansas City in multiple ways. The pass rush made Mahomes misfire as much as ever, while Bo Nix looked impressive for a rookie quarterback going against Steve Spagnuolo on the road at Arrowhead for the first time.
As the Chiefs crept closer in the second half, the Broncos still held the lead until six minutes were left in the fourth quarter. Even then the Chiefs were only up two points and the Broncos had plenty of time (and timeouts) for a sustained drive that would put them over the top when it mattered most.
At the end of regulation, Nix and company had set up kicker Will Lutz for a chip shot of a field goal attempt with time expiring and yet here's what happened:
Just like that, the Chiefs left with another close win and Chenal was a hero. Now he's being honored by the league.
Congratulations to Chenal for his exemplary play. The last Chiefs defender to win the Special Teams Player of the Week was linebacker D.J. Alexander back in 2015.
