The Kansas City Chiefs very well might have lost two of their three starting receivers against the Las Vegas Raiders. Earlier in the game saw Rashee Rice exit with a hamstring injury and in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, Tyquan Thornton came up with a massive catch for the Chiefs and then fell to the ground with what appeared to be a gruesome ankle injury.
You know the injury is bad when the broadcasters calling the game, in this case Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt, told viewers to look away and CBS cut away from the replay as soon as Thornton went down so we couldn't see it. The players were also surrounding Thornton on the field.
Thornton was taken away on a cart to the locker room, and his injury leaves the Chiefs in a tough spot considering they're now down him and Rice. Xavier Worthy, Jalen Royals, and rookie Cyrus Allen likely become the go-to guys for Patrick Mahomes as this team copes for life without two of its three starters.
The injury occured shortly after the Raiders went up 19-17 with the Chiefs needing a score to take the lead. Mahomes connected with Thornton on a 55-yard bomb down the field and set the Chiefs up in a goal-to-go situation where they later punched the ball in to go ahead again.
Thornton had a touchdown earlier in the game and was clearly Mahomes' most trusted target in this game. The hope is that he's okay to return at some point this season and it's worth noting that he did wave to the fans as he was carted off.
Update (8:11 p.m.): Mahomes was asked after the game about Tyquan Thornton's performance and importance. He said, "Yeah, Tyquan, first, I'm just praying for him. You never want anyone to get injured and you hope it's better than it looked out there. But praying for him, and hopefully he comes back healthy."
Update (8:22 p.m.): Andy Reid spoke to the media saying Thornton's left ankle "doesn't look good." Further tests to be taken once the team is back in Kansas City.
