Here's the last time the Chiefs had a losing season and missed the playoffs

As Staind would say, "It's been awhile".

The 2025 season has not been kind to the Kansas City Chiefs. They lost star quarterback Patrick Mahomes for the year in Week 15 and it's clear that, without him, they're a really bad team. The team wasn't playing well even with Mahomes but with their blowout loss to the Titans of all teams, one thing has happened for Kansas City that hasn't in over a decade.

That loss cemented that the Chiefs would have a losing record in the 2025 season. Some might be wondering when the last time this happened to K.C. was since this team has been on quite the tear since Andy Reid got to town in 2013 and Patrick Mahomes joined him in 2017.

The last time the Chiefs had a losing record was before either of those guys were here. In 2012, the Chiefs went 2-12 with Romeo Crennel as the head coach and Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn rotating at quarterback due to terrible play and inconsistencies.

Chiefs fans are facing a reality they have not seen since before Andy Reid

When that season concluded, the Chiefs held the worst record in the NFL and landed the number one pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Crennel was fired at season's end and Reid was hired to take over, a move that will go down in history as one of the smartest things this franchise has ever done.

Since Reid's hiring, the Chiefs had winning seasons from 2013 to 2024 and made the playoffs in all but one of those seasons (with the one year they missed it coming in 2014 when the team went 9-7). So yes, the 2025 season will go down as Reid's worst in Kansas City but it's hard to be too angry about it considering the success that he's sustained as the Chiefs head coach.

The fact of the matter is that, after how good the Chiefs have been since 2013, it was time for them to have a down year and that's what 2025 has been for them. Fans are now pushing for a high draft pick since this is uncharted territory for this franchise since Reid arrived in Kansas City.

It's been a disappointing year for Chiefs fans considering a Super Bowl was on the table at the beginning of the season but sometimes, bad years get sprinkled in. Hopefully, when Patrick Mahomes is healthy again, this team is right back to being a headache for the rest of the league.
