In case you missed Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night, let me give you a quick recap. The game looked over at halftime as the San Antonio Spurs took a nearly 30-point lead against the New York Knicks. Miraculously, the Knicks came all the way back to pull off the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history. And as I watched this incredible comeback happen, it reminded me of the Kansas City Chiefs.
No, it didn't remind me of the time the Chiefs also blew a huge lead against the Colts. Or the Bengals. It reminded me of the time that the Chiefs came back from double digits not once, not twice, but three times on their way to their first championship in 50 years. Knicks fans can relate.
In case you, a Chiefs fan, have forgotten, let me remind you of how the 2019-2020 season ended. First, it started with the Divisional Round game against the Houston Texans. In the blink of an eye, the Texans were up 24-0 and a typical Chiefs collapse looked imminent (again, Knicks fans can probably relate).
But then, by the power of Grayskull, He-Man brought them back by halftime. Oh, sorry, I meant by the power of Arrowhead, Patrick Mahomes brought the Chiefs back. The Masters of the Universe went on to beat the Texans in a blowout.
The following week, the Chiefs again found themselves down by double digits, but this time only by 10. They ultimately dispatched the Tennessee Titans for the AFC Championship.
And the final game is the game we all know and love: Super Bowl LIV. The Chiefs again trailed by 10 points for most of the game and well into the 4th quarter—again, Knicks fans can relate. But then Jet Chip Wasp happened, and the sting was too much for the San Francisco 49ers to overcome. The Chiefs scored 21 unanswered points on the way to glory.
Comebacks in sports are awesome—as long as it's your team, of course. Congrats to the Knicks, and thanks for drumming up some great Chiefs memories as well.
