The Kansas City Chiefs have suffered back-to-back losses after their fiery 5-0 start. Kenneth Walker played a massive role in the undefeated start to the season and, ironically enough, in the two losses, Walker has not had big games.
It's still been a special season from Walker just seven games into the year, however. The Chiefs running back has rushed for 770 yards on 141 carries and found the end zone 8 total times (six rushing, two receiving). He's been an amazing addition to this offense, but defenses have realized what taking him out of the game does to the rest of Kansas City's offense and are making that their main focus.
It would make sense that Denver would have put all of its focus on slowing Walker down, considering he absolutely demolished the Broncos in Week 1. The Broncos were not going to let him do that again.
Walker still had a decent game against the Broncos despite them doing everything they could to prevent him from going off. He carried the rock 21 times for 69 yards, but by zeroing in on Walker, it opened things up for rookie fifth-rounder Emmett Johnson to go to work. He was a major factor as a pass-catcher with five catches for 128 yards and a score. So there's a positive for sure.
Anyway, back to Walker, we've been tracking a possibility of him breaking Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing yards record of 2,105 yards set back in 1984. Is he still on track to do so?
Kenneth Walker's historic quest continues to face obstacles
We're down to the final 10 games of the regular season. Walker needs to rush for 1,335 yards to tie Dickerson's record. That means he'd need at least 133.5 yards per game to reach that goal. He's currently averaging 110.0 yards per game, meaning the record is going to be difficult to reach now.
It was always going to be a tough task to break Dickerson's record. Rushing for 2,105 yards in a single season is really impressive, and there's a reason the record has stood for as long as it has. Teams also don't rely on running the ball as much as they did in the 1980s.
Walker needs a massive finish to make history
Walker can still make history, but it's going to take some massive games from him down the stretch. He showed what he was capable of early in the season, but now that opposing teams will be throwing everything they have at Walker to slow him down, things are bound to get trickier.
Still, we'll keep tracking this until it becomes nearly impossible for Walker to break the record. Hopefully, he has some massive games to help the Chiefs get back in the win column and get his trek to history back on the right track.
