The Kansas City Chiefs haven't had a reliable run game to lean on in quite some time. Brett Veach put in the work this offseason to flip the script in that department by signing reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker. Hopefully, that's enough to change the narrative.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report thinks it could be more than enough. In his list of best-case scenarios for each NFL offense, for the Chiefs, he said "Kenneth Walker Steadies the Ground Game with Patrick Mahomes at 100 Percent", which would be more than okay with Chiefs fans.
"The once-vaunted Kansas City Chiefs offense had two big problems in 2025, even before Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending ACL tear. They lacked reliable pass-catchers who could generate big plays, and they struggled to field a functional ground game.
Ideally, the offseason addition of reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III will take care of the second problem. While Kansas City's receiving corps is still questionable, the Chiefs will need Mahomes to be healthy and at 100 percent for most of the season to significantly rebound in the passing game.
Fortunately, Mahomes is recovering well and was even a participant at OTAs.
If Walker can deliver a top-tier rushing attack and Mahomes can, well, be Mahomes, Kansas City should return to having an above-average offense."
Kenneth Walker can help Chiefs' offense accomplish best-case scenario
Walker was an absolute beast for the Seahawks and that was on full display during the postseason. For a non-quarterback to win Super Bowl MVP, they had to have put on a clinic during the big game and Walker did just that. He rushed for 135 yards and had 26 receiving yards as well. Walker also rushed for over 100 yards during the Seahawks' divisional round win over San Francisco and he found the end zone in that game as well. That guy is now joining the Chiefs.
Not only did the Chiefs sign Walker but they spent a fifth-round pick on Emmett Johnson out of Nebraska, adding yet another weapon to the backfield. Johnson rushed for over 1,450 yards and 12 touchdowns last season and was also effective as a pass-catcher, hauling in 370 yards through the air and adding three touchdowns to his total. He should be a nice weapon for Mahomes and Eric Bieniemy.
Mahomes hasn't had a 1,000-yard rusher to hand off to during his pro career and Walker can hopefully change that. He rushed for 1,027 yards for the Seahawks last year and clearly can be a game-changer offensively. With Mahomes returning from the first major injury of his career, he'll need all of the help he can get and Walker can help take pressure off of him because teams will be expecting more of a mix of runs and passes.
Teams who can run the ball effectively have the advantage because they can control the clock and make the game go at their speed. The Chiefs haven't had that ability in a long time and everyone in Kansas City is hoping that 2026 is the year that changes. Walker should help make that dream a reality.
