The list of nominees has been released for the 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and the Kansas City Chiefs have put forward a very familiar face as their nominee: tight end Travis Kelce.
The prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award recognizes NFL players who excel both on and off the field, particularly in community service and philanthropy. Kelce, a crucial part of Kansas City’s success on the gridiron, has also demonstrated a deep commitment to community engagement in the greater K.C. region.
"I'm truly honored to be nominated as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. This organization and this city mean so much to me and to have the Chiefs nominate me again is special," said Kelce in a statement released by the team.
Kelce's foundation, 87 & Running, has been pivotal in providing resources and support to underserved youth. The foundation emphasizes education, athletics, and mentorship to help young people realize their potential. Contributions include funding scholarships and creating opportunities for kids to participate in sports.
For years, 87 & Running has been working alongside Operation Breakthrough and their most recent venture introduced the Ignition Lab. The lab is a special space for 14 to 18 year olds to encourage STEM learning and entrepreneurial success by teaching innovative product design and coding skills.
Kelce was previously nominated in 2020 for the Walter Payton MOTY Award and joins quarterback Patrick Mahomes as players put forward on multiple occasions. Mahomes has been the team's nominee for each of the past two seasons.
