One day after Justin Fields' name surfaced in potential trade rumors, the matter has been completely resolved. The New York Giants decided against trading for the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback after all. Instead, they pivoted to Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy to help shore up a need at the position following the season-ending injury to Jaxson Dart.
Fields is currently the Chiefs' QB2 behind Patrick Mahomes, and that's where he's staying for the time being. Dealing Fields was never a likely scenario for a number of reasons, so even though his name was floated as a potential trade candidate, Chiefs Kingdom shouldn't him to be leaving anytime soon.
The source of the trade rumors
Over the weekend, Fields' name was floated as an option for the Giants along with four other names. Jordan Schultz indicated there was interest on the Giants' part, who watched their young franchise quarterback go down with torn ligaments in his left knee in a Week 2 loss to the L.A. Rams. Other players mentioned included McCarthy and former Chiefs quarterback Gardner Minshew (now with the Arizona Cardinals).
Jameis Winston took over for Dart in Week 3, and while New York walked away with a win over the Tennessee Titans, it was hard to gauge how the passing game might look in the face of such windy conditions. Now the Giants have McCarthy to pair with Winston and former Chiefs quarterback Jake Haener on the depth chart.
Is Justin Fields going anywhere?
It's important to remember that the Chiefs traded for Fields in the first place back in March, with the plan of keeping him behind Patrick Mahomes as a stopgap option. Mahomes' recovery went according to plan, so the concerns there have been negated, but the Chiefs are a contender who can't afford to play with uncertainty at the game's most important position.
One reason that Fields might be viewed as an available player is the presence of Garrett Nussmeier. The Chiefs selected him in the seventh round of this spring's draft, so while he looked very good in the preseason, it's a stretch to believe that he's one unfortunate play away from starting for a Super Bowl contender. Nussmeier might be the long-term backup going forward, but 2026 was always about having Fields behind Mahomes.
Beyond that, Fields' athleticism is a serious asset, and his presence allows the Chiefs to scheme up inventive plays and packages that will come in handy down the road. Fields was already featured once in a play called "Heisman" that led to a Kenneth Walker touchdown catch in Week 1.
Expect the Chiefs to be players at the NFL's trade deadline, but it's hard to imagine letting go of Fields as a part of the plan. They're positioned as shoppers rather than sellers, and it's hard to imagine any team serving up what it might take to wiggle Fields away from the Chiefs' QB room.
