It's become a running joke in the Kansas City Chiefs fandom whenever a former player gets cut that they'll somehow find their way back to K.C. This has happened frequently during the dynasty with guys like Mecole Hardman, Derrick Nnadi, Mike Pennel, and plenty of others spending time with other teams only to end back up in Kansas City down the road.
Another player that this has happened with is wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. He originally signed with the Chiefs in 2022, helped the team win a Super Bowl, and then joined the Patriots for the 2023 season. When that didn't go according to plan, Smith-Schuster ended up back in Kansas City in 2024 and 2025.
This past offseason, he signed with the Giants but that didn't last long for the Super Bowl champ. On Tuesday, it was announced that for the Giants to make room for newly signed running back Najee Harris, they had to cut Smith-Schuster. Cue all of the speculation about the former Chiefs wide receiver coming back to the team he won a Super Bowl with.
Chiefs don't need to explore JuJu Smith-Schuster reunion
On the one hand, it would make sense for the Chiefs to be linked to Smith-Schuster. There's a positive relationship between the two sides and Kansas City's wide receiver room isn't exactly ripe with talent. Plus, Tyquan Thornton was carted off during Tuesday's practice.
On the other hand, Smith-Schuster isn't the same guy he was during that 2022 season with the Chiefs. He's also been dealing with a knee injury and we all know that the last thing Kansas City needs is another oft-injured player on their roster.
Veach likes to pay it forward and bring guys he's familiar with back to the roster but that doesn't always need to be the case. Sure, maybe Smith-Schuster has had some high highs with the Chiefs but this team needs to break the cycle of continuing to recycle through old names and try to find something new.
Smith-Schuster is always going to be appreciated for what he accomplished in Kansas City but there's a reason this team didn't re-sign him earlier in the offseason and they need to stick with that logic here. Best of luck but hopefully it's with someone else that's not the Chiefs.
