The Kansas City Chiefs made a lot of tough decisions this offseason. While letting Isiah Pacheco walk was tough emotionally given what he provided the team during their back-to-back Super Bowl victories, it wasn't necessarily difficult on a logical level.
After all, Pacheco did not look like the same guy he had been earlier in his career and became frustrating to watch whenever he was carrying the rock. It made sense for the Chiefs to part ways and let Pacheco earn a fresh start somewhere else.
Pacheco already appears to be doing just that with the Detroit Lions, whom he signed with during the offseason. The former seventh-round pick has seemingly fit in well with his new team, and Max DeMara of SideLion Report believes he’ll be the perfect complement to star running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
Isiah Pacheco is already fitting in beautifully with Detroit
Part of that opinion is based on what Pacheco recently said while speaking to the media. He understands his role in the Motor City and is ready to do whatever he needs to in order to help his new team.
"(You) just (have to) be ready at all times. This game, it takes a lot of us to win and (it's) not just one person, (it's) everybody on the team, the staff, the coaches, nutritionists. Everybody plays a part and I'm pretty sure we got that culture here to get things cooking," Pacheco said during his most recent press conference with the media.
DeMara said Pacheco’s experience with the Chiefs should help him thrive with the Lions, adding that he can emerge as a leader in Detroit and elevate both Gibbs and his teammates.
"Perhaps one of the biggest roles Pacheco will have in 2026 will be that of a veteran leader in the locker room. While in Kansas City, Pacheco was around as the Chiefs won a pair of Super Bowls. Even though he has won before, Pacheco has said he remains hungry to get over the mountain top once again," DeMara wrote. "Pacheco has seen how things work in a championship locker room, and knows the proper balance that needs to be struck between teammates. No matter what his stats look like, count on him providing the perfect level of support for Gibbs in more ways than one."
Chiefs fans never had a problem with Pacheco as a person. He was a great teammate during his four years with the Chiefs but he clearly wasn't filling the need they were asking him to fill anymore. If he has a chance to fill a new role with a new team and do it admirably, then more power to him.
