The jerseys for Super Bowl LIX have been unveiled!
The Kansas City Chiefs will don their white away jerseys while the Philadelphia Eagles, the "home team" for Super Bowl LIX, will rock their green home jerseys.
Every year the AFC and NFC rotate which franchise gets to be the "home team" for the big game; this year the NFC got that honor. The designated home team selects which uniforms they'd like to wear for the Super Bowl, and the Eagles have gone with their home green jerseys.
At this point, the Chiefs don't really care what uniform they'll be in, as they've won the Super Bowl in both their red and white jerseys. Heck, last time they won in their white unis was against the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
All of this being said, it appears to be good luck for whichever team is in their road whites for the Super Bowl. According to Tim Capurso of Sports Illustrated, "The trend of teams wearing the white jerseys emerging victorious is one that has become more pronounced in recent years, as 16 of the last 20 Lombardi Trophy winners have donned the white uniforms."
History favors the teams that wear white in the Super Bowl
Capurso noted that only four teams wearing their home uniforms have won the Super Bowl in the last 20 championships and the Chiefs have fielded two of those four teams. The others are the Packers in Super Bowl XLV and, oddly enough, the Eagles, who did it when they beat the Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
At the end of the day, what jerseys the teams are wearing truly doesn't matter. The Chiefs have proven this. The only time they have lost in the Super Bowl during the Patrick Mahomes/Andy Reid era was in Super Bowl LV when they were wearing red (despite the Buccaneers being the designated home team).
Let's hope that history continues to repeat itself here and the road white uniforms serve as even more of a good luck charm to the Kansas City Chiefs as they strive to complete the three-peat.
