Kansas City Chiefs fans are used to seeing Marquez Valdes-Scantling's name linked with other teams. After all, since leaving the Chiefs in the 2024 offseason, MVS has spent time with six different teams. The most recent team whose roster he's trying to make is the Dallas Cowboys and, so far, it appears things are going well for MVS in the Lone Star State.
Marcus Mosher of The Landry Hat wrote about how Cowboys fans need to be taking notice of what Valdes-Scantling is doing in OTAs.
"Despite signing with the team less than two months ago, he is already practicing with the first team. And according to Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the veteran receiver has made some plays with Dak Prescott, including a heady play where he knocked the ball out of the hands of P.J. Locke on what would have been an interception."
Marquez Valdes-Scantling is making some noise with the Cowboys
Now, it's worth noting that MVS is getting to run with the starters due to George Pickens' holdout, something that Mosher touched on. With Pickens unavailable, the Cowboys need someone else to step up and that's what Valdes-Scantling has done. Mosher also pointed out how MVS' experience in the league could help him stick around in Dallas.
"Valdes-Scantling has plenty of NFL experience and has played in just about every type of offense. So it’s not surprising that the coaching staff and Prescott trust him to run the right routes and be where he is supposed to be," Mosher wrote.
"The Cowboys clearly want to upgrade the No. 4 wide receiver spot, and they are hoping that someone can take that job. Valdes-Scantling is putting his hat into the ring, but you still be dubious about him making the roster and having an impact on gamedays. The fourth WR spot generally goes to a player who can help out on special teams, and that’s not MVS."
MVS first started his NFL career as a fifth-round pick by the Packers in 2018. He became a favorite target of Aaron Rodgers while the two were in Green Bay together and then he signed with the Chiefs during the 2022 offseason.
After posting nearly 700 yards receiving during his first year with K.C., MVS never was that type of threat again. He's most remembered for his clutch catch in the AFC Championship Game against the Bengals that helped send the Chiefs to Super Bowl 57, which they went on to win.
After things didn't work out for MVS in Kansas City, he was released in 2024 and has since spent time with the Bills, Saints, Seahawks, 49ers, Steelers, and now Cowboys. He's played in 24 games with those teams and tallied 200 yards and five touchdowns during that time (four of those scores coming with the Saints).
Because he was on two of the Chiefs' Super Bowl-winning rosters, fans will always be interested in what's going on with Marquez Valdes-Scantling. If he can work his way onto the Cowboys' roster, then more power to him.
