Kenny Moore got his wish. After asking for and receiving his freedom from the Indianapolis Colts, the veteran defensive back is now without a home, just like he wanted. How he will use that newfound freedom will be interesting to watch, since his presence on the open market offers a nice upgrade inside for secondaries in need.

One former Kansas City Chiefs legend would love to see how Moore would look in red and gold.

Former Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu spoke out on social media on Thursday, expressing his desire to see Moore suit up for Kansas City, specifically citing how he might perform in Steve Spagnuolo's defense.

"I believe he can transition to safety and with his ability to tackle, hunt ball & his football IQ he can play another 5 years at a high level w/o having to chase slot receivers every down," wrote Mathieu.

Moore was ready to leave Indianapolis one way or another, after previously having submitted a trade request that failed to garner any returns from interested teams. Perhaps that means every general manager knew he was headed for the open market in this manner. Moore's age (31 in August) and a pricey deal made it obvious to move him, especially with 2025 third-round pick Justin Walley in position to take over his role.

A one-time Pro Bowler in 2021, Moore is now the savvy vet on the open market who should have no problem finding suitors for his services. But as a slot corner, the Chiefs have already made a couple of moves to shore up the secondary in that regard. After trading away arguably the best slot defender in the game in Trent McDuffie to the L.A. Rams, the Chiefs rolled the dice with a low-level signing of Kader Kohou of the Miami Dolphins and then drafted Oregon's Jadon Canady in the fourth round.

While any player trying to replace McDuffie is going to represent a significant drop in performance, the idea of Moore shifting to safety could change the game for the Chiefs. The Chiefs are thin after losing Bryan Cook to the Cincinnati Bengals. They signed Alohi Gilman to a three-year deal, but they already needed an upgrade before Cook's departure. Chamarri Conner is a nice enough player, but Jaden Hicks hasn't earned Spagnuolo's trust for some reason and there's little proven depth after that.

If someone like Moore, or another potential starting-level player, were able to slide into the depth chart, the entire back end of the defense would look considerably stronger—especially when thinking about the rigors of a long, grueling season ahead. Whether Moore is up to changing positions is another subject entirely, however, and plenty of teams would like the former Colt to simply keep doing what he does in 2026.
